To determine which size of hat you will be making, you will need to first measure the crown or circumference of the head, where the band of the hat would sit comfortably. Each template set can be made into 2 sizes based on the 3/8 inch seam allowance but can be easily adjusted to size and preference by increasing or decreasing the seam allowance but not over 1/2 inch or under 1/4 inch.
The formula to determine which size you will make is as follows:
Measure the circumference of your head and round up to the nearest whole number. Divide that number by 4. Add 1 inch to that number. That is the size hat template you will make.
Example: Head measures 22.5 inches. Round up to 23 inches. Divide 23 by 4 which equals 5.75 inches. Adding
1 inch which now equals 6.75 inches. That is the size Bucket hat you will make.
This formula has been broken down another step to make it even easier to determine which hat you will need to make.
Small Set:
6 = 19 inches to under 20 inches
6.25 = 20 inches to under 21 inches
Medium Set:
6.5 = 21 inches to under 22 inches
6.75 = 22 inches to under 23 inches
Large Set:
7 = 23 inches to under 24 inches
7.25 = 24 inches to under 25 inches
X Large Set:
7.5 = 25 inches to under 26 inches
7.75 = 26 inches to under 27 inches
To further explain, your head measures 22.5 inches. You will make the 6.75 of the medium set.
If the number falls where it could be between sizes, go to the next number size up. It is better to be a little loose than too tight.
